as we’d given up our kingdom some time ago.

At his booth, no guns, no knives

or grappling hooks or Chinese stars. Instead,

on the table he has placed his heart.

of a sheep, the heart trembles in my hand.

When I look into an atrium, a night

inside reveals.

Its universe falls open, then pulls back

until its last star contracts

while another galaxy begins. Now,

the man explains, it’s everything or nothing.

No one knows in that kind of dark.
